Dates are usually the first thing a retreat leader locks in, and the hardest thing to change later. Flights go out, people pay their deposits, and whatever weather turns up that week is the weather you work with. So it is worth thinking about before anything else.
This is a guide to when to run a retreat in North Bali. The north coast does not follow quite the same calendar as the rest of the island, and that difference is useful to know.
Almost every “best time to visit Bali” article is really about the south, or about Ubud. The north coast is a different place. Around Tejakula, where we are, the climate is drier and more sheltered than the central highlands, which sit at altitude and catch a lot more rain and cooler air through the year.
There are two seasons here. Dry runs roughly July to September. Wet runs November to April. The temperature barely moves either way, sitting around 28 to 30 degrees in the day and dropping to the low twenties at night.
What actually changes across the year is the rain and the light, not the heat.
If you want the most settled, sunny conditions, aim for May through September. The heart of it is July, August and September.
August is the driest and brightest month on this coast. It averages around 8.5 hours of sun a day and barely any rain, something like 18 mm across three rainy days in the whole month. January, at the other end, averages around 438 mm across roughly 21 rainy days. That gap is the single most useful number when you are picking dates.
The sea matters too, and it behaves differently here than in the south. In the dry months it is almost always calm. You can swim, and the reef sits close enough to the shore for easy snorkelling. In the wet season it picks up a little at times, but never the way the southern beaches do. The water in front of the property stays workable far more often than people expect.
The wet season scares people more than it should. Rain in Bali arrives in short heavy bursts, often late in the afternoon, not as endless grey days. Mornings are usually clear, which is exactly what a retreat wants: practice at first light, breakfast together, an open afternoon.
One honest caveat. The last few years the wet season has been unpredictable. Each year has looked a bit different from the one before, though the months after December tend to be the wettest, and January especially. So a wet-season retreat asks for a programme that holds up if an afternoon turns. Most do.
What surprises people is that Tejakula is lovely even in the rain. The garden here is thick and alive whatever the month, the villages carry on at their own pace, and for a group that has come to practise and slow down, a wet afternoon is not a problem. Often it is the point.
It depends on the group.
A first retreat abroad, or people expecting beach days and dependable sun, points clearly to the dry season. May to September, with July to September the surest bet.
A leader who wants it greener, quieter and cheaper, and who trusts their week to survive some rain, can look at October through April. Just go in with eyes open about January.

Stable all year: highs of 28 to 30 degrees, nights of 22 to 24. The heat barely shifts between seasons. What changes is the rain and the sunshine.
